TEXT: John 20:30-31

In this brief passage, John tells us the purpose of his gospel account. The Apostle John labored not only to write but to give his life so that others may know the work and identity of Jesus. In summarizing the entire Gospel of John, these 2 verses help us answer the most important questions we could ever ask: What did Jesus do? Who is Jesus? How Should we respond? These aren’t hypothetical questions. How we respond to these questions is a matter of life and death.

  1. HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.

    • According to these 2 verses, what are the major themes of John’s Gospel? How does this inform how you will read and study John’s Gospel?

    • What are the biggest intellectual objections you and/or other people have with believing the identity and work of Jesus? How do these verses (and other passages) answer respond to those objections?

  1. HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God.

    • What are some common misunderstandings of Jesus that you have encountered or have held yourself? Compare and contrast them with John’s understanding of Jesus here.

    • What idols of the heart do these false views of Jesus reveal?

  2. HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally).

    • What do you hope to learn as you walk through the Gospel of John? What do you long for God to do in and through you as you study this book?

    • John’s purpose is missional. Who in your life needs to believe in Jesus and find life in his name? Write a name or names down and begin praying for them?
