TEXT - Mark 10:32-52

As Jesus foretells his coming death, two disciples make a request to sit at his side in the coming kingdom. Their request is for prominence with Jesus. The response of Christ in this passage shows us that true prominence for disciples of Christ is found in Christlike humility. The son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

HEAD: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR MINDS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD’S WORD.

  • Jesus foretells his death for the third time. Why do the disciples respond with amazement? What misconceptions do they have about Jesus and his mission?

  • What misconceptions about the purpose and mission of Jesus do you hear today? How do you respond?

  • Compare and contrast the request of James and John with the request of Bartimaeus. How are these similarities and differences significant?

HEART: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR AFFECTIONS TO HELP US LOVE GOD

  • Consider the request of James and John (v.37). What are they asking for? What desires are motivating this request?

  • How does the response of Jesus correct their desires?

  • What desires of your heart need to be guided and corrected by Jesus?

HANDS: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR HANDS TO HELP US LIVE FOR GOD (PERSONALLY, COMMUNALLY, AND MISSIONALLY)

  • Read verses 43-45 again. How does the gospel change how you engage following groups of people in your life and what tangible steps will you take to serve? (consider specific, personal examples)

    1. Your church family?

    2. Non-Christians in your life (neighborhood, workplace, hobbies)?

    3. Those in need (financially, physically, etc.)
