TEXT: John 6:22-40

In this passage, Jesus speaks directly to the crowds who were awed by his many signs, including the feeding of the 5,000. As Jesus teaches, he directly confronts selfish motives and points his hearers to the proper response to his work: belief. To believe in Jesus is to receive the bread of life and have our souls eternally satisfied.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.

    • Read the words of Jesus in verse 26. The previous passage is essential to understanding the words of Jesus here. How would you summarize the events of John 6:1-21 in one or two sentences?

    • In verse 32 Jesus references the events of Exodus 16. What happens in that chapter? How does Exodus 16 help us better understand what Jesus teaches of himself in John 6:22-40?

  2. HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God.

    • Read verse 27. In what ways are we tempted to “work for food that perishes?”

    • Read verses 28-29. How did the crowds misunderstand what Jesus was saying? How can you relate to their misunderstanding of how to gain eternal life (ie. work vs. faith)?

  3. HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally).

    • What does it mean for your soul to be hungry and thirsty? Give examples of specific ways you experience this. Then explore how the Bread of Life can satisfy your hunger in those situations.

    • What does Jesus teach us here about the sovereignty of God in our lives? (Verses 36-39) How are these truths challenging? How are they encouraging?
