Jesus performs two more miraculous signs; the feeding of the 5,000 and walking on water in the storm. As he continues to minister to others it seems that they still don't comprehend who he is. Jesus didn't come to merely bring provision and power; he is the provision and power of God.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.

    • The Gospel of John emphasis the signs of Jesus as pointers to spiritual realities. What spiritual reality does the feeding of the 5,000 draw our attention to?

    • What spiritual reality does Jesus walking on water draw our attention to?

  2. HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God.

    • Read verses 5-6. Where else do we see Jesus asking questions in the Gospel of John? What does this tell us about Jesus’ primary concern as he ministers to others?

    • Phillip and Andrew express doubt, even though they’ve seen Jesus perform many miraculous signs. How can you relate? What has Jesus taught you in moments when you’ve recognized your insufficiency?

  3. HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally).

    • In what ways are you (like the crowds) tempted to come to Jesus for what he can give instead of who he is?

    • How is the posture of Jesus toward the crowds and his disciples and example for us as we relate to others?
