TEXT: John 1:19-34

In this passage, we are introduced to the ministry of John the Baptist. The Old Testament scriptures told of one who would come to prepare the way for the Messiah. John was clear about his purpose: to point others to the coming Jesus. When Jesus arrives on the scene, John uses clear Old Testament imagery to identify Jesus, calling him the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. John then willingly fades into the background as Jesus begins his earthly ministry.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.

    • When John is approached by the Jewish leaders and asked about his identity (v.19), how does he answer their question and what’s the difference between John’s ministry and the ministry of Jesus (See Isaiah 40:1-5)?

    • In verse 29 John calls Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. This phrase points us back to the institution of Passover in Exodus 12:3-13. What connections can you see between Passover and Jesus?

  2. HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God.

    • What does verse 29 tell us about what our world needs most from God and what response should this stir in us?

    • Where do you see the Trinity in this passage (Father, Son, Spirit) and how does this scene reveal to us the greatness of Jesus?

  3. HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally).

    • Read 1 John 1:9 in light of John 1:29. Is your life marked by confession of sin? Why/ Why not?

    • John The Baptist had a unique role in redemptive history as the prophet who prepared the way for Christ, but his humility is an example for each of us. What are some specific ways you need to lay down pride and humbly serve Christ?
