Text: Luke 24:13-35

On this resurrection Sunday we looked at a passage near and dear to our church: Luke 24:13-35 recounts the journey of two disciples from Jerusalem to Emmaus. On this seven-mile road, they encounter the resurrected Jesus without recognizing him. Jesus opens the scriptures to them and proclaims the glories of the gospel to their hopeless, grief-stricken hearts. Later that evening, when they recognize him they say, “Did not our hearts burn within us while we talked to us on the road?” Where can we find lasting hope in a world of grief? How can wounded, discouraged hearts be mended and made whole? Only in Jesus, the crucified and risen Savior. Come to Him and live!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

HEAD: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR MINDS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD’S WORD.

  • It is clear that the disciples Jesus encounters are filled with grief and confusion. Based on verses 19–24, how would you describe the states of mind and heart they had experienced?

  • What kind of evidence does Jesus provide to help these disciples embrace the reality of his resurrection? (v.25-35)

HEART: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR AFFECTIONS TO HELP US LOVE GOD

  • Why do you think Jesus is slow to reveal himself to these disciples?

  • Read verse 32. What do you think the disciples meant by describing their hearts as burning within? Does this describe your relationship with Jesus? Why? Why not?

HANDS: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR HANDS TO HELP US LIVE FOR GOD (PERSONALLY, COMMUNALLY, AND MISSIONALLY)

  • These two disciples were lonely, confused, and hopeless. Yet Jesus was lovingly and patiently walking beside them without them knowing it. Reflect on a time when you felt lonely, confused, and hopeless. How does the work of Jesus in this passage bring comfort in those times?

  • What can we learn from Jesus here about walking with others who are confused, lonely, and hopeless? Think of people in your own life who need this hope of the risen Savior. How will you move toward them in love?

  • Reflect for a moment on verse 27. The Bible is all about Jesus. How does this reality change the way you think about the Bible?
